What started Deaf Prom?

What started Deaf Prom? You may ask. For years and decades, Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals all had to attend proms with their hearing counterparts and usually were the only ones there who were Deaf or Hard of Hearing. For most of us, we hold memories of our proms dear to our hearts but you would be surprised how many times Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals have shared that their prom experiences were less than spectacular for various reasons. One would be that there were not that many of their own peers at the prom. They were basically drowned in a sea of people that look like themselves but do not speak the same language. For them to be in a room full of their own “kind” is like a warm fuzzy blanket, if we may say. The need for such social events where mainstreamed students can meet and be themselves had led to the idea of Deaf Prom.

What makes Deaf Prom in Southern California different from any other you have seen is that it is designed entirely and only for Deaf and Hard of Hearing high school students coming from all walks of life. If you are Deaf and a high school student in Southern California, this prom belongs to you.

Looking forward to seeing you in May!
